Military veterans soon will receive a career and vocational boost with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and MTSU.

The VA and MTSU are entering into a partnership called “VetSuccess on Campus.” MTSU will become the first university in Tennessee and one of only 16 nationwide to be a part of the VetSuccess program.

MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee and Travis Kraft, acting director of the Veterans Affairs Nashville Regional office, signed a formal memorandum of understanding on March 13 in the University’s Sam Ingram Building.

“Our mutual goal is to ease the transition of veterans from combat to campus,” McPhee said. “We will work together to provide veterans a more supportive campus environment and easier access to benefits such as academic advice, financial aid, career counseling and peer support.”

McPhee added that MTSU continues as the No. 1 higher-education choice of Tennessee veterans and G.I. Jobs magazine has named the University a “Military-Friendly Campus” for the second year in a row.

She will provide on-campus services such as career counseling and vocational planning and will act as a liaison to help answer questions on VA Chapter 33 and other VA benefits, said Cathy Kirchner, University registrar. Conrad also will work directly with the University’s Chapter 31 vocational-rehabilitation veterans.Heather Conrad, a Veterans Affairs counselor from Nashville, will work at MTSU starting April 2.

“This is a wonderful program that’s virtually free to MTSU,” said Kirchner, adding that the University will provide office space in Room 201 in the Cope Administration Building and Veterans Affairs will pay Conrad’s salary and buy supplies and equipment.

“I’m excited,” said Conrad, who has worked for the VA for 15 years. “This is an amazing opportunity to be a part of the campus culture, helping veterans adjust to the civilian world.

“A veteran coming out of the service generally will be in their late 30s or early 40s and will need a lot of adjustment to ease that transition into college. They need a warm attitude and approach. I will be there to support their needs to the best of my ability. I won’t just give them a 1-800 phone number; I’m going to get on the phone or the Internet and make calls, if necessary, for them.”

Bettye Hodge, vocational rehabilitation and employment officer for the Veterans Affairs Nashville Region, joined Kraft and Conrad at the MOU signing.

MTSU Provost Brad Bartel, Associate Vice Provost David Cicotello, Lt. Col. Tharrel “T.K.” Kast and Kirchner joined McPhee as MTSU representatives at the signing. Kast serves as professor of military science, directing the University’s ROTC program.

McPhee also acknowledged several officers and executives representing Maj. Gen. Terry “Max” Haston, the adjutant general of Tennessee and an MTSU alumnus. They included Lt. Col. Jim Reed; retired Navy veteran John Patterson; retired Army veteran Mike Goodrich; John V. Patterson, family assistance coordinator for the Tennessee National Guard; and Maj. Andy Ashley, TNG education services officer and company commander as well as a 1992 MTSU graduate.

MTSU currently has “992 students receiving GI benefits,” Kirchner said, adding that more than 1,000 students received GI benefits last fall. The spring 2012 semester total includes 80 vocational-rehabilitation veterans.

The MTSU Registrar’s Office has two full-time employees, Ray Howell and Gerry Craig, and seven student employees who are dedicated to certifying veterans’ benefits in a timely manner, Kirchner said. (That website is www.mtsu.edu/records/vets.shtml.)

“At MTSU, we are fortunate to have so many administrators and faculty on campus working to help veterans in the areas of advising, filing for GI benefits, course selection and vocational counseling,” Kirchner said.

In her new position, Conrad will be working closely with the Universitys’ new Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, which includes faculty, administrators and the president of BRAVO, MTSU’s student veterans organization. Dr. Tony Johnston, a a School of Agribusiness and Agriscience professor and U.S. Army veteran who remains active in the Tennessee Army National Guard, serves as committee chair.

VetSuccess began in June 2009 as a pilot project at the University of South Florida. Three months later, VetSuccess expanded to Cleveland State University and San Diego State University. Texas A&M University-Central Texas was among two community colleges and three four-year schools adding VetSuccess in October 2010.

Waxing and Tinting

Waxing has always been popular – why?

Waxing continues to be the most efficient way of removing body hair at an affordable price. There are certainly more expensive and more painful ways to remove body hair, but waxing has stood the test of time.

What areas do you wax?

We can wax any area of the body. Our most popular areas are brows, lips, full face, legs, underarms, bikini, arms and for men, backs and chests. One note about bikini waxing – we do not do Brazilian waxes.

How long does it take to wax?

It varies for each person, depending on the area to be waxed, how much hair and its texture. For example, a large area like full leg waxing generally takes about 45 minutes. We also do a “half-leg” wax from the knee down, which takes about 20 minutes. Brows take a matter of seconds.

What preparations do clients have to do for a waxing session? For example, how long should your body hair be in order to wax?

In order for the wax to adhere to the body hair, I recommend that the hair should be at least ¼ inches long. So in between waxes, there is a “growing out” phase to get the best results.

How long does waxing last?

Generally, a leg wax lasts a couple of weeks; a facial wax lasts about a month. It’s different for each person because body hair grows at different rates.

Some clients have sensitive skin or allergies– do you use special products?

We’re unique because we use a strawberry wax imported from Australia, which contains no resins. I have found that the best waxing products come from island or tropical countries where waxing is widespread. There is a harder wax that we also use that doesn’t adhere to the skin, only to the hair. We use these waxes on all clients with great results

Still on sensitive skin, my skin gets very red after waxing. What can you do to combat this?

Taking a Benadryl or other allergy medication before your waxing session will cut down on the redness. I also use a cold treatment after waxing, which helps taken the redness out, soothes skin, closes up the pores and calms the hair follicles.

Another thing I do to help with redness is that I treat the area with tea tree oil, then apply the wax. Also, clients will come with makeup on, and I wax over that. The tree tea oil and makeup acts as barriers, which helps prevent redness.

I’ve heard that waxing will make the hair grow back thicker. Is that true?

No, that is not true. In fact, if you wax regularly, it actually slows hair growth. It’s like the hair follicle kind of gives up and slows down after regular waxing.

Does waxing cause wrinkles?

No. Waxing also serves to exfoliate, which actually encourages your skin to produce more collagen.

Does waxing hurt?

It’s equivalent to removing a band-aid from a hairy part of your body.

I’m going on a cruise and want to look my best. How long beforehand should I wax?

I recommend waxing about 4-5 days before a cruise or vacation. This gives your skin time to calm down and hair follicles to close up.

About Brow Tinting

As you age, the natural colors of your brows tend to fade. Brow tinting is a very quick way to restore color to your brows. It takes seconds to do, and the color of your brows should be as dark as the darkest part of your hair. It lasts about a month.

About Eyelash Tinting

Some of my clients are allergic to mascara. Other clients don’t want to worry with mascara while on vacation and are planning to do a lot of swimming. Or if you just want to wake up each morning without the owl-eyes from mascara residue. Eyelash tinting is the answer to these situations. We use a special tint formula designed specifically for use around the eye. It takes about 5 – 10 minutes, and lasts about a month.

Tammy Young of What's New The Salon Talks About What You Should Know About  Anti-Aging Treatments

What treatments do you have for aging skin – fine facial lines and sagging?

We have two treatments available for aging skin: Microdermabrasion for fine lines and Compu-lift for sagging. However, Microdermabrasion is not just for facial lines – it can be beneficial for acne sufferers.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an abrasive, rapid exfoliation that sands off 3 layers of dead or damaged skin. It reveals a smoother, undamaged layer of skin underneath. It’s safe, painless, and you see immediate results.

How does it work?

The machine has two tubes, one that the fine crystals flow through that exfoliates, and then another tube that suctions off the dead skin cells. The treatment takes about 20-30 minutes. The process of eliminating dead and damaged skin stimulates collagen production, which is essential for healthy, glowing skin.

After Microdermabrasion treatments, is there any follow-up that clients need to do?

We recommend that you don’t touch your face or wear makeup for the rest of the day. That’s the only follow-up that clients need to do. This treatment has no side effects.

For aging skin, what are the benefits of Microdermabrasion?

There are several benefits. First of all, because it exfoliates about 33% of damaged skin from the face, it helps eliminate fine lines. Aging skin tends to look uneven, with darker “age spots” that are caused by hormones, medications or a number of reasons. Microdermabrasion eliminates the damaged skin buildup and can lighten dark spots. It can also help smooth out any scars a client may have. Finally, it helps makeup go on smoother.

What are the benefits of Microdermabrasion for acne?

The crystals we use absorb oil. Because it exfoliates dead and damaged skin, it helps to reveal healthier skin. As mentioned previously, it also helps smooth out acne scars.

For aging skin, how often do you recommend Microdermabrasion and how long does it last?

For clients over 40, we recommend once every two weeks for a six-week period. The benefits last for about a year. For those over 50, we recommend these treatment sessions twice a year for best results.

What is Compu-lift?

As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity and facial muscles get lazy, which is compounded by gravity. Besides developing jowls, the sagging is also most obvious around the eyes. Compu-lift is a non-surgical treatment that stimulates the muscles deep down to wake them up to do their job to help lift, tone and support the facial skin.

How does Compu-lift work?

The machine has two prongs that sends small positive and negative electric currents to the muscles to wake them up and lift the muscles. It’s painless and essentially exercises the facial muscles and tones them up. The treatment takes about 45 minutes, is painless, and there are no side effects.

How often do you recommend Compu-lift treatments?

I tell clients that it’s a lot like working out at the gym – it’s a commitment that if you do it regularly, you see results. We recommend twice a week for six weeks, then once a month for maintenance. Many clients start this in their 40s, but it’s never too early or late to start these treatments.

Do you see immediate results after Compu-lift treatments?

Yes. In fact I like to do one side of a client’s face first, then let them look in the mirror to see the difference. Some clients with a special occasion or party will do three treatments in one week to lift and tone their skin for their event. However, this doesn’t last, because it really takes a regular commitment over a period of time, as I mentioned before.

Is there any follow-up care after having a Compu-lift treatment?

No.

Do clients ever have Compu-lift and Microdermabrasion at the same time?

Yes, many clients like to combine both at the same time. Both treatments take about an hour when done together.

Spray Tanning

Spray Tanning has become more and more popular.  Why is that?

It is really the only safe tan you can have.  Sun exposure, from either being outdoors or from a tanning bed, causes premature aging of the skin, different kinds of skin cancer, and a variety of other skin-related problems.  Plus, spray tanning products have dramatically improved over the years and has become a part of modern culture.  Those beautiful Hollywood stars have spray tans, and are not the result of hours in the sun laying by the pool.

How is the spray tan you use here different from the do-it-yourself home tanning products?

The home tanning products contain a lot of chemicals and it’s hard to get on evenly – it tends to streak and have a unique smell.  And depending on your skin tone, it may not look like a natural tan.

The product we use, Sun FX, is the same one they use on “Dancing with the Stars.”  It has 75% natural ingredients and produces a natural, brown tone – not the orangey tones you sometimes get with the at home self-tanning products.  We have 3 shades:  light, medium and dark and it is odorless.  We do what we call a “Rapid Tan,” which takes about 15 minutes to apply.  It sets in 2 hours and you can shower after 3 hours.

How do your clients prepare for a “Rapid Tan?”

We recommend you take a shower the night before your session and exfoliate with a loofah or exfoliating cloth.  Pay extra attention to rough areas like elbows, feet, or knees.  Also, do any shaving the night before.  After your shower, do not use any moisturizing lotion.  This preparation will help ensure a successful, streakless application of your tan.

What do clients wear to the tanning session?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing to come and go from the salon – nothing tight.  Some clients like to tan in their bikinis, shorts, undergarmets, or nothing at all.  We also have disposable clothes for clients to wear if they choose.

Can I wear makeup to my tanning session?

Yes, the tanner works through makeup.  And if the tanner gets in your hair, it easily washes out.

Will the tan rub off?

No.  However, there is a bronzer in the product that helps us apply the tan evenly.  This may rub off on clothes or sheets, but it is water-soluble and washes out easily.

How long does the tan last?

It lasts for 7 to 10 days, depending on your activities.  For example, if you swim in a chlorinated pool, the tan will not last as long.

What do you recommend to help extend the life of the tan?

We recommend not working out and heavily perspiring for 3 hours after the tan is applied.  Use a moisturizer and avoid exfoliating after your tan is applied.

Sometimes the tan will look darker on calloused areas, like elbows, feet, hands, fingers and knees.  How can that be avoided?

If that happens, we tell people to spray some Windex on a washcloth and rub it on the area, which blends the color nicely.  That way, there won’t be those darker areas where the product has settled.

Are there any extra precautions for clients who may have sensitive skin?

No, we have had no issues using this product.  We have used it here at What’s New for 5 years and it has been successful for all skin types.

After my tan, can I get out in the sun?

Yes, but it is important to note that our product does not have sunscreen, so make sure if you’re going outdoors for a day of sun, you wear sunscreen as you normally would.

We wanted to thank Fleet Feet Sports Murfreesboro for partnering with us in implementing an AED program for their store here in Murfreesboro. The staff at Fleet Feet were trained in CPR and AED use and were interested in purchasing a defibrillator to have available during their many training runs that prepare their clients for marathons. We wanted to commend their efforts in providing a safe training enviornment for their customers and willingness to go out of their way to help their community.

Fleet Feet Sports Murfreesboro is just one of the many customers that have helped us to raise awareness to the importance of Public Access Defibrillation. It is estimated that more than 95% of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching a hospital, resulting in approximately 250,000 deaths each year in the U.S. That's three lives every seven minutes - over 600 people a day. With increased awareness to these statistics and getting more members of the community and in the workplace trained in CPR and the widespread placement of AEDs, we can help to increase the survival rates of those who suffer from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

Selecting a great hair extensionist

A lot of salons are starting to carry hair extensions, but before you head to the first one that you hear of, there are some key points to consider. Renita Hill, of What's New the Salon, Murfreesboro, Tn is expert in several areas that are key to getting a head of great quality extensions that last and make you feel great.

First of all, a beautiful head of hair extensions starts with superb quality hair. Renita primarily uses Great Lengths extensions. This is high quality hair that assures the wearer of 3 to 5 months of beautiful hair when following her instructions on maintenance. Next, she is a talented colorist and stylist, so you can be sure that the color of the extensions matches the color that the consumer is already wearing, whether it is a solid color or multi-dimensional. Variations of colors in the extensions adds to the believability of the finished look. Finally, Renita makes sure that an adequate amount of hair is used so that the finished look is not skimpy at the bottom. More hair does add to the final cost, but this is worth it to make the hair look believable and gorgeous for up to 5 months.
