Murfreesboro, TN - So, gyros. Most of us have had it at least once. But in honesty, who knows much about them? I know they are from the Middle East, a dish from the Arabic and Indian cultures. Rumor has it they came originally from the Greeks. They use lamb in their gyros, which is a bit different. Here in Murfreesboro, restaurants that specialize in gyros are popping up everywhere. Chicago Style Gyros at Broad and Memorial seems to take a different approach, chain restaurant mixed with eastern culture.
Here’s a HobNobMurfreesboro freebie! You can practically say it however you want. I say “Gee-roh” with a ‘g’ like “grain.” Some people say “Jai-roh.” So I asked an Arabic translator which is correct. In short, every region is going to say it a little differently. Some places across the Middle East even has differences in pronunciation from formal to informal conversation. God bless the U.S.A.! We can call it whatever we want! But I digress.
Aaron and I walked into the restaurant at about 1:00. Aaron was a particular blessing on this trip, having spent nearly two years overseas in Egypt, Pakistan, India and the like. He knows Arabic foods better than anyone else I know. There was no line when we entered and the front of the restaurant was like a cafeteria. Someone takes your order and prepares your meal in front of you. In about 4 minutes, the plate was in front of me, full to the brim. Then, something happened that floored me. The man behind the register asked me, “Is this your first time here?” I smiled and nodded. “Okay, then your drink is free today. I hope you enjoy it.” This is something that has never happened to me before and I was blown away!
Sitting down, I was very impressed with the variety of tastes this gyro meal presented. Tender meat, soft pita bread and robustly flavorful cucumber sauce. The salad was dipped in, I believe, salt water which gave it a mild yet tasty dressing. Almost fluffy. Weird right? And if you don’t try the baklava, you will be punishing yourself by being deprived of one of life’s great desserts.
It’s always fun to experience something about a different culture. Chicago Style Gyro was no exception. I had fun and was treated as though someone had invited me to their home. This place was something special. The price was one of the cheapest I’ve ever paid for a full meal in Murfreesboro. The atmosphere was a bit lacking, but the lack of TLC is typical of chains.
I will be visiting Chicago Style Gyro again. You should too. It is a great place to grab a quick lunch or even to utilize their drive-thru. On a day you feel like doing something a little different, or against the grain, this is the place you should visit. With spring coming, I bet you get that craving before you know it. Enjoy!
