Murfreesboro, TN - Any of you who have been driving down Highway 96 know about the clown. The guy who stands at Old Fort (Hwy 96) and St Andrews with an All American Café guitar sign advertising free coffee. Well, I’ve seen the clown in my nightmares, so it was time to give it the old college try. Suffice it to say, there were a few gems here, but overall…well, you just need to read on.
Chad and I wandered in just before noon. The front of the restaurant can be confusing. It looks as though you are walking into a Dippin’ Dots or a café. If you take a peak in the store, you see the Dots up front but all over the ceiling are brightly colored umbrellas. So maybe it’s an umbrella store? Who knows? When we walked in, there was a family of four in front of us. There’s a menu on the wall, but no prices posted. Seventeen minutes later, I finally sat down to my cold cut sandwich, bag of chips, and bottled drink. The timing was really pitiful, especially around lunch. Okay, okay. I know. Sometimes you have to wait for great food, it comes with the ambiance. However, this place had the ambiance of a beach front ice cream stand. Wish the two matched, but they don’t.
The sandwich was mediocre. 100% whole wheat bread surrounded three slices of pork and beef meat, which reminded me of bologna. It tasted about as good. Topping it off were Swiss cheese, romaine lettuce, mayo and mustard. I can’t give any special props to this sandwich because there was nothing unique about it. The drink was Welch’s (I still have the bottle) and the side was Sun Chips. BUT! The man behind the counter was very kind and truly cared about the value of his service. So much so that he brought out three complimentary doughnut holes for our coming in.
I will probably not be returning to the All American Café again. For the price and quality, I would do just as good to go to the nearest grocery store (there are four within five miles of this store) and buy all the same ingredients he did. Now that I sit here writing this, twenty minutes after leaving the café, I’m headed to the refrigerator just to try and appease the appetite I still have. The only way I’d tell someone to go to this place is if you just finished eating and forgot about a lunch appointment. You will not get enough food and you will not be wowed. Given the choice between eating here or not eating, I’d choose to save my five dollars. I don’t see this place making it past their first year. But you go knock yourself out and let me know about your experience. Enjoy!
