Murfreesboro, TN - Oh...WOW... That's probably enough to finish the review. I have NEVER given a completely perfect score to a restaurant. When it comes to incredible food and a beautiful environment for the perfect date, B. McNeel's is one angel wing shy of paradise.
Lora and I rolled onto the sqaure around 6:00pm on Friday evening. The Restaurant (look for the big red "DINNER" sign) was about half full. Real brick walls, greenery an plenty of artwork give B.McNeel's a rustic and unique feel. We were seated right away because we had a reservation. We began with appetizers and let me give you the answer before you ask, the Spicy Coconut Shrimp is to die for. My taste buds are still leaping for joy.
At 6:30, I ordered the Jack Daniels New York Strip, normally listed at $21. The menu itself has entrees from $14-$29.50, so choose well! I believe you'll be pleasantly satisfied regardless of what you choose. For a side, I ordered the Crab and Corn Bisque Soup.
It took 25 minutes to prepare our meals. Plenty of time to resist finger licking from the the shrimp. The plate put in front of me was truly a piece of art. Being from the South, I know how to truly appreciate a steak. This was just beyond superb. With great preparation and the Jack Daniels Sauce, each bite was a little victory dance for flavor. Each cut was: perfectly cooked, delicate to the tongue, and absolutely delectable. The Crab and Corn soup was equally breathtaking, mixed in between bites of steak and resisting running into my fantasy world.
After finishing with a $5 Key Lime Pie, Lora and I both agreed that this is the best date night in Murfreesboro, hands down. At any moment, when the question arises of "what do you want to do tonight?" Seriously consider putting B. McNeel's on the agenda. I guarantee a picturesque evening with an encore performance of leftover. Enjoy!
Murfreesboro, TN - At HobNobMurfreesboro, we're going to try something new. I (Jeff) have gotten lots of feedback about the last 2 years of restaurant reviews. One Big chunk of that Input has been the details I use to describe the food, creating a hunger in the readers (great!). Since you tended to enjoy that so much, we are expanding that idea into the Featured Piece, where we talk about one particular product or service. So...Enjoy!
We discovered before releasing this article that Naticakes has been closed in Murfreesboro. However, we would like to still share the selfless things Naticakes is doing so that when you visit Franklin, TN or Lexington, KY, you may still visit the local locations and support this heart-warming cause.
The first Featured Piece is NatiCakes. This delicacy is draped in delicious desserts was created to support little Nati. Murfreesboro, TN - So, I’ve received some comments lately that the only restaurants I tend to review are those which are moderately priced. “What about the high end places?” they say. Well, other than the obvious answer that I pay for the reviews myself and I’d be homeless on that edible-torial route, the biggest reason is that I would rather review a place that you could go tonight, whether it is or isn’t a big enough occasion to celebrate.
This weekend was my birthday. Since my parents came to visit (Hi Mom!) and the lady friend also came to town so we celebrated everyone coming together at Cathay Asian Bistro! Now, if you’ve never been, listen up. These guys have put a samurai effort into giving you the rich history expected from the asian culture. Statues and large columns line the outside walls in a very zen-like manner. Are you in Murfreesboro or Tokyo or Hong Kong? You will have to decide for yourself.
We went in right at 7:00 and were seated immediately by reservation. The inside exchanges rich history for modern, minimalistic chic. Our server was nice and humorous, setting the tone for an enjoyable evening. Every table I could see outside the bar was set up hibachi-style (chairs set up 8 at a time around a 3 corner open grill).
Menu items range from $10 - $30 per entree. I have learned a very valuable thing from eating around the world; if the restaurant is hibachi and highly decorated, expect to pay for the pleasure, no matter the quality. I ordered the hibachi salmon with fried rice.
It took about 30 minutes for our chef to arrive. He was very funny, very entertaining and very good. Have you ever seen a hibachi chef stack an onion and light it? Well, he did two layers of... onion... volcano. Yeah, he rocked.
Overall, we had a great time. The cost of a show and dinner was just about justified. If I have a big something-or-other in which to commemorate, I’ll definitely go back to Cathay! Have the corporate card to take a client wining and dining? This is an excellent choice. Did you finally get that dream date and want to make a lasting impressions? Cathay will do the trick. Whatever the occasion, Cathay Asian Bistro will be a great choice. Enjoy!

Lunch Bowl - $8.99
Murfreesboro, TN - Eat hungry. It’s an easy principal but I don’t think some restaurants are aware of it. If you go somewhere and clean your plate, you should be full, right? Well nothing turns me off more than eating out and feeling as though I haven’t eaten at all. Forget that mess. So I picked a time that I’d be very hungry and set out to the town.
HobNob Murfreesboro’s Virtual City Mayor, John Iaccheri, loves Mongolian. So, per his suggestion we went to Genghis Grill – The Mongolian Stir Fry. Ya know, let’s just call it The Grill. We caught it right at the beginning of lunch, 11:00am. The restaurant was a little empty, but filled up quickly. All lunch bowls are $8.99, which makes life simple. The food bar is where you assemble your food, still uncooked. Everything you fit in the bowl will be cooked with your choice of rice. You exchange that bowl with a number that you put on your table.
I stacked my bowl with a lot of meat and greens. FYI, their jalepenos are amazing, fresh, green, crisp, and huge. Just letting you know. The food was delivered in about 7 minutes and tasted great. The service works a little differently. Yes, they get you a drink. Yes, they bring your food. However, there’s no order-taking and also no connection between server and patron. So if you are looking to have great service, you can’t get it here. It’s not set up that way.
The inside of the restaurant is very nice, done in a Genghis Khan motif, portraying you as the warrior who takes on the worthy enemy, hunger. Inside is very nice and well kept. Just be sure to not actually hit the gongs. You’ll know what I’m talking about.
All in all I had a good time. When you go (and you should), be sure take a friend so you don’t feel alone. Take an appetite because this meal will DEFINITELY fill you up. If you are comfortable enough, take a date and stuff your face. Go for your lunch break if you have time. Take your parents, or kids, or both! You should go and have a great time. Enjoy!

U Pick 2 - Chipotle chicken sandwich with macaroni and cheese - $8.29
Murfreesboro, TN - Yep, there are Paneras all over the country... Just about like Starbucks. Do you remember your first time? I do. It was in Chattanooga with the principal trumpet of the CSO. Panera is a healthy and exciting blend of atmosphere and service, business and pleasure, apples and oranges. Alright, I just threw in that last one, but you get the point.
Lora joined me today, helping me break the pattern of single lunch dates. We were in just after 1:00pm and the lines were beginning to die down. Having such a prime location on Old Fort Parkway makes "high volume times" mean that you are standing around a while. However, we caught it at the end and were able to order pretty quickly.
Now Dylan was great help. I usually order the same thing every time and he really helped get me out of my box. He asked about my favorite foods, usual restaurants and other questions that really showed he was interesting in getting me something I'd enjoy. He even got in a few good jokes Thanks Dylan! Together, he honed in on the chipotle chicken sandwich and get this, macaroni and cheese. Yeah, seriously. But to bring Dylan back in the review, "It's signature, so it has to be good, right?"
We were given a pager and within two minutes, the pager was going nuts. I barely had time to fill up a drink! Well lemme tell ya... This was a great meal. Of course the sandwich was good. The chipotle sauce is one of my new town favorites, second to none. This macaroni... wow. Don't get me wrong, I'm American. I've had a much mac and cheese as every other kid, but this was something special. To begin, it was covered in white cheese. Really, I feel like a kid again. Forget Kraft.
It was a great experience. Good food and good laughs. My only single complaint was the price. Another dollar cheaper for the U Pick 2 and I'll be in those doors multiple times per week. The coffee is decent and offers free refills. So in the end it pretty much balances out. It's a great place to schedule a few meetings or to spend a Saturday afternoon on the porch with your significant other. It's a safe bet you'll have a good time. Enjoy!

Sausage egg and cheese croissant, doughnut and drink - $3.99
Murfreesboro, TN - Shout it out real quick. What was the last restaurant you fell in love with and couldn't get enough of? Seriously, shout it at the screen. Haha, you are yelling at a computer. But really, I am in love with the All American Cafe. After trying them again in January, I cannot get enough of this place. Their chicken salad sandwich (see last review) is unparalleled. No one else in town comes close. Very recently, I tried the new breakfast menu. You've got to hear this.
I walked in today right before 9:00am, prime time for breakfast. The whole crew remembered me from my last visit and called me by name. They were genuinely interested in my dar and after a few minutes of chit-chatting, I ordered a sausage, egg and cheese croissant. The art behind the counter began and within a minute, I had the first half of my order, the doughnut and drink. Let me clarify, within 60 seconds of walking in the door, I was eating. Three minutes later, I had a croissant sandwich and was on my way.
On top of great service and phenomenal food, the price is incomparable. Let it be known that you can not get as much breakfast food in Murfreesboro that tastes this good spending less than five dollars. Period. With this price, I'll drive past McDonald's. I'll drive past Starbucks (that's saying a lot coming from me). All American Cafe is cost effective and fast.
The final, great piece of the puzzle is location. Anyone going to the interstate in the morning can reap great benefits from AAC. Drive past the two sequential lights just over I-24 and the restaurant is on your left. It's enough out of main traffic to be easy to get to and not be a half mile out of your way. Especially if you are on Cason Lane, St Andrews, or driving out 96 to Franklin, this is ON YOUR WAY.
So as All American Cafe quickly moves toward my top 3 best restaurants in the 'Boro, I give my highest recommendations to patron the restaurant. It's a quick in-and-out or a good hang out. Thake in a $5 bill and see what you can do with it. I dare you. This place is great. The people, the food, the atmosphere and the price will all have you coming back for more. That's a HobNobMurfreesboro restaurant reviewers guarantee. ENjoy!

Two BBQ pork sandwiches with sweet tea - $6.90
Murfreesboro, TN - I've not always been a fan of Whitt's Barbeque. Something about it has always struck me odd, even though I could never quite place a finger on it. Today is the big review so let's see what happens.
I rode solo on this one. Was in a hurry and really tested their timing. Walking into the South Church location (there's another store on Sulpher Springs Road) at 11:30 revealed to me a half filled restaurant (or is it half empty?). It's a simple menu, focusing on barbeque sandwiches, sides, and large orders for groups. Because of this, prices are extremely variable, but you can get a good meal for between $5-8. I chose the BBQ pork sandwich, a good staple at any barbeque place... and of course, the sweet tea. Service was superb and the place was as clean as a local place can be.
Looking around, there are three pastel yellow walls, the restaurant's theme color. The ordering station is just inside the door and random hangings give you plenty of flyers and articles to read and enjoy while you wait. However, I did not have time. In less than five minutes, I was walking out with a full bag and mouth-watering aromas.
The sandwiches were good. Meat was pretty-well prepared, but I've had better. The mayonaisse-based slaw is actually quite good and in all honesty, saved the sandwich. The sweet tea is just right. High five.
All in all, I was quite impressed. The overall experience is quite good. I'd loev to go back and spend time with a goodfriend. It's not a date spot, but be sure and take your other for sustenance. At Whitt's, they do a good job and deserve your business. Enjoy!

Bacon Cheeseburger - $5.99
Murfreesboro, TN - It's been a little while since I've reviewed a chain restaurant. They tend to be somewhere most people have already experienced. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is no exception. By a show of hands who has not tasted their burgers" Exactly, I see no hands. So read on and hear this experience. We can have a little fun and you can either agree or disagree.
Five Guys is on Thompson Lane at The Oaks Shopping Center, near Pei Wei and Jason's Deli. I joined Wendy Ann from Big Frog Custom Tee's just after two for lunch. The restaurant was about half full and the staff was great. We were welcomed coming in the door and Gavinn was very attentive to us. This is my only beef (pun!) with Five Guys: the food is very expensive! Granted the food may be filling, but six bucks for a McDonald's sized burger is painful. That one piece is what keeps me from going back each week.
The burger itself was very good. Ingredients are fresh and the sauces are explosive. The meal was delivered with a bag full of fries in six minutes. You'll also really enjoy the fries. The walls are covered in reviews and news articles from around the country. Hey! Maybe this one will get up there!
All in all it's a great experience. You'll have fun with the staff and just hanging out. This is a place I'd go to hang out with friends. Come stay awhile and get your monty's worth in refills. Stay awhile, enjoy the fries and have fun! Enjoy!

Murfreesboro, TN: Today's HobNobMurfreesboro restaurant review may throw you for a little bit of a loop. It's currently 27 degrees outside and as the last bit of snow melts from the ground, I was treated to a dessert that's underappreciated on days like today. Sweet CeCe's serves frozen yogurt. Yup, you heard me correctly. Sweet CeCe's Original Tart is a healthy treat to be enjoyed anytime.
Something I've been trying to keep in mind, by your advice, is to be more health conscious. I mean c'mon, who doesn't enjoy eating a ten pound pizza from Fox's Pizza? Well one half cup of the Original Tart has 70 calories. Use some discretion when you add toppings and you have a healthy, very tasty dish.
When you enter Sweet CeCe's, remember this procedure: go inside, grab a cup in the back, find the lever for the Original Tart, fill that cup to your heart's content. After that, go over to the toppings bar and stack up the different fresh fruits, pay by the ounce and enjoy! My dish came out to around $4, so it's about the same as a good cup of Starbucks. I'd like to pay just a little less because in the end, frozen stuff is frozen. The taste is great, but I'll end up saving this for special occassions.
The ambiance is very colorful but still a little dry. This is a new place though so I'm confident that after a few months, they will find their own personality with the atmosphere that's already begun.
Each bite is equally as savory as the one before. Sweet and tart together is sure to set your taste buds a-dancing! The fruit adds a delectable texture that even the best sweet tooth can appreciate. Even with all the toppings, the Original Tart is a great health option. I also found it to be a great meal replacement!
All in all, Sweet CeCe's Sweet Tart gets two HobNob thumbs up. Exciting flavor with no guilt. It's a great deal. I get to eat real fruit without stalking grocery stores, waiting on the freshest shipments. The location at The Avenue is perfect for a date or after a long shopping day. So take the leap and give Swee CeCe's the first taste test. I promise you'll enjoy yourself. Enjoy!

Philly Combo - $6.95
Murfreesboro, TN - There comes a time when writers have to admit they are wrong. Last summer, I reviewed All American Cafe on Highway 96. I claimed that the "deli meets ice cream stand" lacked character and would probably only be open for six months. I have now eaten my words (Get it? Eaten?).
Ron invited Lora and I out for the end of lunch. Just walking in the door (same area as Papa Butt's Hot Sauce Store and Jersey Mike's) I could see that things had changed. The same multi-colored umbrellas cover the ceiling, folding tables and chairs have been replaced with beautiful restaurant booths. The feel of All American Cafe has done a complete 180. You will simply have to see it for yourself. And oh! What smells! I nearly melted walking inside the door.
Menu items range from $2.59 - $6.95 and you can diversify your combo more than any other place I've seen. Fries can be substituted for a doughnut (dessert capable? oh yes!). Chips can be subbed for fries. The world is your oyster. No, they do not serve oyster. After 12 minutes, I received the Philly Combo and Lora had her Chicken Salad Sandwich. They Philly was good, very good. It still did not hold a candle to that chicken salad. man, oh man. Delicious pecans, fresh fruit... I didn't know that chicken salad could taste so good!
So after round two of All American Cafe, I must humbly admit that I was wrong in my first review. I now believe the cafe can and should be around for a long time. It appears that Murfreesboro has added another tasty unique location to the menu. Head out to All American Cafe as soon as you can. Enjoy!
