Running on Empty
By Philip A Foster, MA - Life Coach
Have you ever felt drained? Ever gotten to a place where you felt overwhelmed by the simplest of things and wondered how in the world you would be able to go on? Are you feeling burned out in your job or maybe even your marriage or relationship? Do you have a burned out employee or family member? It is very possible that you or someone you know is or has been running on EMPTY! As coaches and counselors we often look towards the concept of a person’s "emotional cup". The emotional cup (sometimes referred to as our love cup) represents the place where we store our contentment or dissatisfaction with the things of our life. Our Emotional Cups are best designed to hold our joy, happiness, security, value, happiness and so on. When we find ourselves burning out it is normally because we have "poured ourselves" completely out and we are now empty or void of those things that make us full of joy. When we empty out our emotional cup it is only natural that it fills back up with things such as stress, anxiety, hurt, guilt anger, and more. And when our cups get over burdened with such things we can become depressed, overwhelmed, sick, sad, maybe even addicted to something. We start to lose sense of self -- who we are. I personally know how running on empty feels. I know what it is like to empty oneself out of everything - giving it all to my job and marriage to the point of self destruction. To avoid this, it is important to daily find ways to skim off the sludge of our cups and make room for joy and contentment. There are many ways to achieve this idea. Take breaks at work, have a guys/girls night out with your friends, exercise, relax, maybe even find a way to take some things off your plate. We must start to identify the things that are draining us and start to develop healthy options to overcome the draining of our cups. One way would be to work with a counselor or life coach to help start identifying healthy options to your cup draining lifestyle. To ignore your emotional cup is to ignore yourself worth and being. God designed our cups to be full of joy and happiness... it is time to empty out the sludge and start living whole again.
