Waxing and Tinting

Waxing has always been popular – why?

Waxing continues to be the most efficient way of removing body hair at an affordable price. There are certainly more expensive and more painful ways to remove body hair, but waxing has stood the test of time.

What areas do you wax?

We can wax any area of the body. Our most popular areas are brows, lips, full face, legs, underarms, bikini, arms and for men, backs and chests. One note about bikini waxing – we do not do Brazilian waxes.

How long does it take to wax?

It varies for each person, depending on the area to be waxed, how much hair and its texture. For example, a large area like full leg waxing generally takes about 45 minutes. We also do a “half-leg” wax from the knee down, which takes about 20 minutes. Brows take a matter of seconds.

What preparations do clients have to do for a waxing session? For example, how long should your body hair be in order to wax?

In order for the wax to adhere to the body hair, I recommend that the hair should be at least ¼ inches long. So in between waxes, there is a “growing out” phase to get the best results.

How long does waxing last?

Generally, a leg wax lasts a couple of weeks; a facial wax lasts about a month. It’s different for each person because body hair grows at different rates.

Some clients have sensitive skin or allergies– do you use special products?

We’re unique because we use a strawberry wax imported from Australia, which contains no resins. I have found that the best waxing products come from island or tropical countries where waxing is widespread. There is a harder wax that we also use that doesn’t adhere to the skin, only to the hair. We use these waxes on all clients with great results

Still on sensitive skin, my skin gets very red after waxing. What can you do to combat this?

Taking a Benadryl or other allergy medication before your waxing session will cut down on the redness. I also use a cold treatment after waxing, which helps taken the redness out, soothes skin, closes up the pores and calms the hair follicles.

Another thing I do to help with redness is that I treat the area with tea tree oil, then apply the wax. Also, clients will come with makeup on, and I wax over that. The tree tea oil and makeup acts as barriers, which helps prevent redness.

I’ve heard that waxing will make the hair grow back thicker. Is that true?

No, that is not true. In fact, if you wax regularly, it actually slows hair growth. It’s like the hair follicle kind of gives up and slows down after regular waxing.

Does waxing cause wrinkles?

No. Waxing also serves to exfoliate, which actually encourages your skin to produce more collagen.

Does waxing hurt?

It’s equivalent to removing a band-aid from a hairy part of your body.

I’m going on a cruise and want to look my best. How long beforehand should I wax?

I recommend waxing about 4-5 days before a cruise or vacation. This gives your skin time to calm down and hair follicles to close up.

About Brow Tinting

As you age, the natural colors of your brows tend to fade. Brow tinting is a very quick way to restore color to your brows. It takes seconds to do, and the color of your brows should be as dark as the darkest part of your hair. It lasts about a month.

About Eyelash Tinting

Some of my clients are allergic to mascara. Other clients don’t want to worry with mascara while on vacation and are planning to do a lot of swimming. Or if you just want to wake up each morning without the owl-eyes from mascara residue. Eyelash tinting is the answer to these situations. We use a special tint formula designed specifically for use around the eye. It takes about 5 – 10 minutes, and lasts about a month.

(ARA) - About 4.5 million Americans wear braces or other dental appliances to straighten their teeth, according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Many more - an estimated 50 to 75 percent of the population - have some form of malocclusion or misaligned teeth and could benefit from orthodontic treatment.

The majority of orthodontic patients are children or teenagers - commonly starting treatment between 9 and 14 years of age.  Now, however, with innovative treatment alternatives to traditional metal braces, more adults are opting to go into treatment. One in five patients is an adult age 18 or older, according to the AAO, and many parents are going into treatment with their children, which can be a great way to save time by scheduling joint appointments. Invisalign clear braces are available for adults and teens, and can save even more time with shorter and fewer office visits. Orthodontists consistently say that anyone with healthy teeth and gums can straighten their smile at any time, regardless of age.

"Today there are many ways to straighten your teeth with new leading-edge technology that can make orthodontic treatment healthier, more comfortable, cosmetically appealing, and affordable too," says Beverly Hills, Calif.-based orthodontist, Dr. Alexander Waldman. "These new innovative alternatives to traditional wires and brackets, such as Invisalign, address the concerns over comfort, esthetics and cost that may prevent some people from seeking orthodontic treatment that could improve their smiles and quality of life."

Teeth that are crooked, misaligned or have too much or too little space in between are among the most common problems treated with braces. Hereditary factors like a smaller palate can contribute to these problems. Environmental factors including thumb-sucking or accidents are other causes. In addition to impacting one's appearance, teeth that are badly misaligned can impede eating and speech.

Here are some tips for finding the right treatment for you or your child, addressing common problems and keeping cost-saving considerations in mind:

* An orthodontist or dentist can tell you if you need braces or some other treatment to correct misaligned teeth. The initial consultation to determine if you need braces is almost always a budget friendly, free-of-charge visit, making it easy to get more than one opinion.

* One of the most cosmetically appealing treatments for aligning your teeth can also be very affordable. Invisalign straightens teeth like metal braces and costs about the same, but is virtually invisible on your teeth. A series of clear aligners, made from smooth plastic custom-made to fit to your teeth, eliminates the gum and mouth irritation often associated with metal braces while moving your teeth in small increments so there's little pain. This treatment can also prevent costly emergency visits for broken wires, as well as post-treatment teeth whitening or repair.

Fixed wire and bracket braces can make it difficult to brush and floss leaving teeth vulnerable to developing decay, plaque, periodontal disease and stains that must be taken care of after braces are removed. Because Invisalign wearers can remove their aligners to brush and floss, they can more easily maintain good oral hygiene.

"Compared to traditional metal braces, my patients that are treated with removable appliances find that it is much easier to maintain good oral hygiene which results in fewer post-treatment procedures," adds Waldman.

* Many dental insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment, but when less than 100 percent is covered or for those without dental insurance, many orthodontists now offer payment plans that allow you to spread the cost of treatment out over the course of treatment rather than paying in budget-busting lump sums at the beginning and end of treatment.

* Setting aside pre-tax dollars in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through your employer is another way to make paying for braces easier.

According to Waldman, "Braces have almost become a rite of passage for teens. Now adults who didn't have their teeth straightened as teens, perhaps because of financial or cosmetic concerns at the time, can improve their smile as adults - and maintain a professional appearance for work - with modern technology like Invisalign."

It’s no secret that I enjoy the finer things in life. From a good book to a good massage, I am always looking for a great way to relax. This week, I had a whole new experience in relaxation while improving my skin with my visit to Equilibrium Med Spa.

After hearing many great things about Equilibrium, I decided to go in for a facial with reflexology and laser genesis. I had never had a facial or laser treatment, so I was a little hesitant.

I walked in to a very comfortable atmosphere and was greeted my multiple friendly faces. Allison, the spa coordinator, was extremely familiar with the many products available at Equilibrium and made some great recommendations.

My experience began with a facial cleansing and a brief meeting with operating partner, Lori Hoyt.  We discussed my particular issues with my complexion, and what to expect with the laser genesis procedure. Any remaining worries that I had were eased with her knowledge and professionalism.

The goal of laser genesis is to even skin texture, reduce pore size and treat fine wrinkles. I was nervous since I associate the word laser with pain. It was a pleasant surprise when there was no pain, just warmth with an occasional pop. Lori and I just talked the whole time, and it went by very quickly. For the best results, it is recommended to schedule multiple visits, but with even just one I could tell a difference in the clarity of my skin.

Next, it was time for my facial. Mary, my aesthetician, did an amazing job. She was so friendly and accommodating to my particular skin needs. She gave me lots of valuable tips for maintaining great skin. For example, did you know that the SPF in your moisturizer and makeup probably is not enough to protect against all types of UV rays? I even made another appointment with her for later this month!

So, if you are looking to look a little younger or simply want a clearer complexion, a visit to Equilibrium is a great way to jump start your new face. For more information you can visit their website at equilibriummedspa.com.

Pale, monochromatic makeup in shades of beige-rose was all the rage, and after some investigating, it looks like Michelle Williams wore this exact look this past weekend at the Berlin Film Festival.

In nearly every store you visit, upon checkout the cashier asks if you would like to be on their email list to receive special offers. I am not one to give my email address out casually, but there are multiple occasions where it has saved me money.

I am a creature of habit, and if you are like me you have your favorite stores too. I saw this week’s piece in Ann Taylor Loft a few weeks ago, but with snow still on the ground I refused to pay full price for shorts. I kept checking back, but with every visit the shorts were still priced at $39.50. I had pretty much given up on them until I got an email saying they were half off for the weekend. I went and bought them that day.

Although it might be a few more weeks before I can wear them, I am super excited about these printed shorts. I usually avoid wearing shorts at all, seeing as you typically get two options- up to the cheek or down to the knee- and neither are flattering. These are the perfect length, and I can’t wait to sport them with a tee shirt or button down.

While junk mail can quickly fill your inbox, it’s a good idea to register online with stores you frequently shop at. You can save money without having to clip coupons!

(ARA) - Winter can take a toll on anyone's beauty regimen. Extreme cold makes skin dry and flaky, wind strips moisture from hair and temperature changes from inside to outside make it hard to dress appropriately. U.S. Olympic athletes who are gliding down ski slopes, spending hours on the ice and training in biting temperatures know firsthand how harsh winter elements can do more than put a damper on your looks -- it can also affect the health of hair and skin.

So when top-performing athletes like skier Lindsey Vonn, ice dancer Tanith Belbin, speed skater Allison Baver and bobsled gold medalist Vonetta Flowers prepare for winter, they pay special attention to their beauty routines and have excellent advice on how to handle the winter weather and its effects on how women look and feel.

Even in the cold, stay cool

Rigorous activity, no matter how cold the temperatures, will make your temperature rise. To stay fresh throughout training -- or even on days off -- athletes want an antiperspirant that can keep up with their demanding lifestyles.

The best options out there combine strong protection against odor and perspiration, and a fresh scent that will last throughout the day. "Antiperspirant is a must-have for U.S. Olympic athletes during training and competition," says bobsled gold medalist Vonetta Flowers. "Staying fresh and cool with Secret Clinical Strength Sport gives me confidence that I can be dry and comfortable all day long."

Show off your hair

With cold winds whipping through their hair, Winter U.S. Olympic athletes know just how dried out hair can get. Their hair products have to stand up to some of the most extreme conditions because when the helmet comes off, or the spotlight shines on them, they want their hair to look its best.

It often takes more than just one product to maintain healthy locks through the trials of winter weather. "I'm in and out of hot and cold environments throughout the winter, which strips moisture and is tough on my hair," says Lindsey Vonn. "I like the way Pantene Ice Shine keeps my hair moisturized and looking great."

Beat dry skin

The lack of humidity in the air throughout the season is also a concern. Even normally well-balanced skin throughout the year calls for extra effort to keep it moisturized in the winter. Winter U.S. Olympic athletes rely on products that help to keep their skin soft and supple."I spend a lot of time in a cold arena and my skin gets very dry. I love that I can start fighting dryness in the shower with a moisturizing body wash like Olay Body Wash with Body Butter Ribbons," says ice dancer Tanith Belbin.

A shining moment

As winter weather tends to be windy and drying, lips may also feel parched and flaky. To keep lips looking shiny and fresh, these athletes use a gloss to add some sheen and keep them looking their best. "I like Covergirl ShineBlast lip gloss because it gives my lips beautiful shine and lasts for hours," says bobsled gold medalist Vonetta Flowers.

Because they are always on the go, training across the country and competing around the world, these U.S. Olympic athletes look for products they can find easily, even when they're away from home. To keep your look in gold medal condition, take the extra steps that will fight off the beauty-diminishing effects of winter.
