National Wear Red Day is today, Feb. 3, and Saint Thomas Heart at Middle Tennessee Medical Center (MTMC) and Saint Thomas Heart at Baptist Hospital provided red hats – instead of the normal pink and blue hats – to babies in the MTMC and Baptist Hospital nurseries to help raise awareness for heart disease in women.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and over, taking the life of 1 in 3 women each year. That means many of the women in these babies’ lives, including mothers, grandmothers, aunts and sisters, or even the babies themselves, could be affected by heart disease at some point during their lifetime. Yet only 1 in 5 women believe heart disease is their greatest health threat.

More than 120 red caps, which took approximately 300 hours to complete, were knitted by volunteers from Helping Hands at Judson Baptist Church and donated to the hospitals.

Recognizing National Wear Red Day is part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women initiative, locally sponsored by Saint Thomas Heart, the cardiac division of Saint Thomas Health that includes the cardiology programs at Baptist Hospital, Middle Tennessee Medical Center and Saint Thomas Hospital.
