A 13-year-old Smyrna boy was charged with felony manufacturing explosive devices after a homemade device was found Wednesday during a search of his home, Rutherford County Sheriff’s school resource officers said.

The boy apparently disclosed the information about making the devices when his Smyrna Middle School teacher asked eighth grade students how they spent their summer, said SRO Capt. Barry Hendrixson. The teacher alerted SRO Bucky Watts, who along with SRO supervisors, detectives and patrol officers obtained consent from the boy’s mother to search her home on Stokes Drive in Smyrna.

Tennessee Highway Patrol’s bomb squad removed the devices while Smyrna Police and Smyrna Fire Departments assisted.

SRO Lt. Brad Harrison said the boy’s mother cooperated with the investigation.

The boy was taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center for processing. A hearing is pending in Juvenile Court.

Sheriff Robert F. Arnold said this is another good example of agencies working together quickly to keep the community safe.

“We took the threat very seriously in responding and coordinating with other agencies to eliminate this potential threat to our community,” Arnold said. “We’ll always take these situations very seriously to protect the citizens of Rutherford County.”

MURFREESBORO TN - South Rutherford off Church Street has re-opened after being closed by Murfreesboro Police following a huge explosion at Southern Container's facility just after 9 a.m. this morning when a steam boiler blew up.

Despite extensive damage to the building, police report no serious injuries with all company employees accounted for.

The big explosion shook windows, and in some cases knocked pictures off walls, across a large area.

With a gas line broken, police closed South Rutherford and the nearby CSX railroad line until it could be shut off.
