Murfreesboro TN Pet of the Week: Duval
Duval is a handsome little rat terrier that needs someone that can take him out to help socialize him. He's a very active dog and loves to run. He loves going outside for walks and loves car rides! He's very good with other dogs, but can attempt to be dominant in a pack. If he's challenged he backs down immediately though. He CANNOT go to a home with kid nor livestock. He is too traumatized from his abuse that it must be an adult only home, preferably female only, but has can bond with men.
Duvalwas owned by people across the street from us while we lived in Florida. They'd had another rat terrier 6 months before that they'd brought home as a tiny little puppy, too young to really be away from his mother. He was indoor for a while then was put in their back fenced yard with a tiny little pittie puppy. Over time they couldn't be bothered to feed him and he withered away. By the time the two of them dug a hole under the fence and escaped they were nothing but bone. We took both to the vet and had them treated for worms and horrible flea infestations. We got weight on them and found a home for the pittie baby.
Next thing we know they've got another pittie and another rattie, Duval. Same story, except this time when they threw them out back they tied them to trees. On more than one occasion I saw their kids throwing rocks and sticks at both of them. I would tell their parents who would shrug and walk away. I reported it to animal control but was told there was no evidence so they couldn't do anything.
Duval and this pittie did at least get some food and didn't wither as badly as Murphy and the other pittie did. But when Duval finally chewed through his rope and he and that pittie were able to escape he was scared to death of humans. For three weeks I'd sit on the front porch for half an hour to two hours trying to coax him to me with food. We left food for them every day. Eventually I was able to pet him long enough to grab him. He turned around and bit the snot out of me for it, but I had him and wouldn't let go.
We took him in and he spent just as many weeks under our bed. I'd drag him out and put him on the bed with us and he'd stay as long as I held him. As soon as I let go, back under the bed he'd go.
For the first probably 3 or 4 months he never walked. He would lay flat on his belly and crawl everywhere he went if there were people round. But in the backyard with the other dogs he was a flash of lightning!! We spent a lot of time in Key West back then and him crawling around the house reminded me of the Duval Street Crawl, thus his name.
