Out Front on Main, Inc. is pleased to present Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it all For You by Christopher Durang and Directed by Ryan Vogel May 10-20 Thursdays-Sundays at 7:30pm. Out Front on Main, Inc. is located at 1511 E. Main Street in historic downtown Murfreesboro. Tickets and Info (615) 869-8617 or www.outfrontonmain.com

A Dark Comedy about Religion for everyone to laugh at.

Sister Mary Ignatius (Holly Amber), a teaching nun who is much concerned with sin in all of it's various forms, deliver a cautionary lecture to her charges. One of them, a precocious little boy named Thomas (Michael Hayes), can quote the Ten Commandments on cue, and each time he does so Sister Mary rewards him with a cookie. But when several of her former students turn up, the picture darkens. One of them is a happy mother of an illegitimate child (Anna Matsen); another a contennted homosexual (Ryan T Daniel); still another has had two abortions (Kelly Northcutt-Hayes); while the other student, now an alcoholic, contemplates suicide (Ryan Vogel). Thier stories are disturbing - but also very funny - and it is quickly apparent that one thing they all have in common is thier loathing for Sister Mary and the unyeilding dogma which she forced on them in their formative years. In the end there is mayhem and bloodshed but, with this, the unsettling feeling that, amid the laughter, some devastating truths have been told.

Out Front on Main, Inc. is pleased to announce Marsha Norman's Pulitzer Prize Winning 'night, Mother directed by Ryan T. Daniel. The show runs April 19-29 Thursdays-Sundays at 7:30pm. Reservations and info at (615) 869-8617 or www.outfrontonmain.com Out Front on Main, Inc. is located at 1511 E. Main Street, Murfreesboro, beside MTSU.

Briefly, `night, Mother is a play one act with two characters on the stage, Jessie Cates (Lora Phillips Hortert), late thirties to early forties, who lives with her mother, Thelma (Meigie Mabry). The play opens with Jessie asking her mother where a particular gun is kept. She finds it with Thelma's help. As she cleans the gun, she quietly announces she's going to be killing herself at the end of the evening. Jessie's announcement sets off a fierce struggle between mother and daughter, with Thelma using every strategy she can conceive of to talk Jessie out of her plan. Thelma becomes so desperate, she even resorts to telling Jessie the truth about a number of issues that have affected her life.

This play is brilliant in every way, characters, dialogue, pacing. The reason I've included it in this work book is because it illustrates a central facet about the nature of what creates drama in a story: the anticipation of an outcome for a dramatic issue. In this case, that means that Thelma, and the story's audience, learns early on of Jessie's plans. And because of learning Jessie's plans, both Thelma and the story's audience are thrust deep into the heart of this story's questions...

Night, Mother Flier

Dr. Mark Jackson of the MTSU English Department will lead a special lecture on folk and blues musician Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter on Tuesday, April 3.

Ledbetter was a Louisiana native who gained national fame in the 1940s after decades of performing folk and blues music across the South. Imprisoned twice, “Lead Belly” used his jail time to learn and write more songs, even using music to gain a pardon from a Texas governor. The 4:30 p.m. lecture will be held in Room 106 of the Paul W. Martin Senior Honors Building on campus. It’s part of the Spring 2012 Honors Lecture Series at MTSU, which is focused on “Prison Writing.”

Folklorists Alan and John Lomax discovered Ledbetter in the Angola Prison Farm while recording prison songs for the Library of Congress and brought him and his music to the rest of the world.

“Lead Belly” was best known for his work on the 12-string guitar, although he played multiple instruments, including the accordion, mandolin and piano. He brought folk ballads like “Goodnight Irene,” “Midnight Special,” “The House of the Rising Sun” and “The Rock Island Line” into the mainstream and wrote his own gospel, blues, folk, political and topical songs.

Jackson teaches courses on American literature, popular culture, folklore and American song at MTSU. He published Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthriethrough the University Press of Mississippi in 2007 and also compiled, edited and produced several CDs through the West Virginia University Press, including “Coal Digging Blues: Songs of West Virginia Miners.”

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information about the MTSU Honors Lecture Series, visit www.mtsu.edu/honors or call 615-898-2152.

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of power. It can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. The "imbalance of power" may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "target".

Bullying consists of three basic types of abuse – emotional, verbal, and physical. It typically involves subtle methods of coercion such as intimidation. Bullying can be defined in many different ways. The UK currently has no legal definition of bullying, while some U.S. states have laws against it.

Bullying ranges from simple one-on-one bullying to more complex bullying in which the bully may have one or more 'lieutenants' who may seem to be willing to assist the primary bully in his bullying activities. Bullying in school and the workplace is also referred to as peer abuse.

Donald Margulies' Pulitzer Prize winning Dinner With Friends continues March 22-24 at 7:30pm, directed for the stage by BWW TN Best Director George W. Manus, Jr. Out Front on Main, Inc. is located at 1511 E. Main Street in historic downtown Murfreesboro, TN Tickets are $10 general admission and $5. students and seniors. Info and reservations (615) 869-8617 or www.outfrontonmain.com Dinner With Friends celebrates two years of Out Front on Main, Inc. in Murfreesboro.

Gabe and Karen (Tony Hortert and Holly Amber), a happily married middle-aged couple, have been friends with Tom and Beth (Molly Breen and Bryce Damuth), another married couple, for many years. In fact, it was Gabe and Karen who fixed up their friends in the first place. While having dinner at Gabe and Karen's home one night, Beth tearfully reveals that she is getting a divorce from Tom, who has been unfaithful.

Over the course of the play, we see both couples at different ages and stages of their lives, and we witness the effects of Tom and Beth's breakup on Gabe and Karen, who first feel compelled to choose sides, and then begin to question the strength of their own seemingly tranquil marriage. They also begin to see the real meaning behind their friendships with Tom and Beth.

Chad Young of Nashville Parent Magazine writes: "George W. Manus Jr.’s expert direction brings the drama to the forefront, especially in regard to the fact that the gravity existing with what’s not said speaks volumes over what is spoken. Out Front on Main’s Dinner with Friends is truly the best theater production I’ve seen in a long, long time! And the power of this show certainly roots Out Front as a true gem of Rutherford County’s theater arena."

Tom, who had been away on business, finds out that Beth has told their friends about the looming divorce, and hastens to Gabe and Karen's home. Tom and Beth had planned to tell their friends about their breakup together, but Tom now believes that Beth has unfairly presented herself as the wronged party, and feels he must present his own side of the story.
