Meet the Locals Jenny Williams
It is rare that one person can act so selflessly to help better the lives of thousands of children. That is exactly what Jenny Williams has done by establishing Candle Wishes, a nonprofit organization that throws birthday parties for families in need.
Since its founding in 2002, Candle Wishes has provided happy birthday experiences to thousands of underprivileged children across Tennessee. Established in Murfreesboro, the nonprofit organization now has programs in Franklin and Memphis. In 2010 alone, 600 children will be able to celebrate their birthdays because of Candle Wishes.
Jenny was only a high school student when she was inspired by the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree. She knew that if a stranger was willing to sponsor a child for a brighter Christmas, then she could help make happy birthdays too.
“After sponsoring a little girl, I started thinking about the families in need who were unable to give gifts at Christmas,” said Jenny. “I wanted to be able to help them throughout the year.”
Candle Wishes is run entirely through fund raising and donations. Jenny has organized various fund raising projects, including an upcoming Predators game where a portion of ticket sales will benefit the organization.
“While it is our desire to fulfill the birthday wishes of participating children, we want to first make sure some of their basic needs such as clothing and shoes are met,” explained Jenny. “In order to do this, Candle Wishes finds individuals to sponsor children and supply their birthday wishes and needs.”
Jenny also works with LifeWay Christian Resources as a marketing strategist. In her spare time, this new mommy loves spending time outdoors with her son and hubby (who she has been with since middle school!).
