A $10 donation at the gallery door covers the cost of the event with all proceeds going to produce local art programs for children. A children’s art camp is already scheduled this summer at Cannonsburgh for students entering 4th -9thgrades. This year, the camp will be held the week of July 16th-20th. An additional camp will be at the Sam Davis Home in Smyrna. (Tentative date is July 9-13) Subjects taught will be perspective, composition, color theory, and abstracts through the use of sketching, watercolor and acrylics.

Founded by a local group of artists and chartered in 1966, the Murfreesboro Art League is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop and maintain a vibrant artistic environment in the Rutherford/ Murfreesboro community. To maintain this environment, the league strives to promote the appreciation and love of art in our area by hosting the gallery, having art exhibitions throughout the city, and teaching classes. The first three Monday nights of each month are dedicated to adult classes, which are held from 7-9pm at the Cannonsburgh gallery.  We offer classes in many disciplines for artists of all levels. Courses vary from the usual oil, acrylic and watercolor to fun, “different” types of classes like scratchboard, en caustics, and batik. We attract and accept a wide range of artistic abilities, interests and skill levels- from beginner to professional. The gallery portion of the league is open on Saturdays from 10-4 and Sundays from 1-4 from the Spring until the Fall.  These regular viewing days are FREE and open to the public.

MAL Artist Comments:

Carole Carroll – Painting for me is across between dreaminess and a day at the beach. I love “smoozling” the thick rich paint into vibrant, intoxicating colors and smearing them on a blank canvas for the pure delight of it.

Mark Jackson – I worked in the graphic design industry for 36 years before hanging it up. Now, I enjoy painting.

Chelsea Williams – I thrive on the minutia of creating a realistic piece, but also enjoy expressing emotions with more abstract artwork. My subjects range from realistic nature and portraits to still life and abstracts.

Danny Jones – I dabbled in art as a youngster and in 2006 I decided to do what I had always wanted to, paint. …Selling one of my originals is like selling a child…

Suzanne LeBeau – I decided that I’ve been throwing many things away that might be seen in a new light. I plan to do much of my works in the near future using discarded materials.

Claire Smith – I’ve never felt at home on earth. I’ve been a stranger all my life. …I learned to count by counting the stars of the Milky Way as they came out at night-until there were too many stars to count. I wondered which light in the sky did I really belong on. …So, one night-I left the earth and moved out into space…I moved among the planets…Finally I came to the end of the universe and there was a wall…I decided to climb over. I saw…all the images I have been drawing floating before me. My images were real after all.

Local graphic and web designer, Karen L. Burton - owner of Poodles Doodles, a Murfreesboro based creative services firm - has decided to take her art back to its roots for one year. From now until February 1st, 2013 she will produce a minimum of one piece of traditional art per day and upload each piece to her newest website, www.365drawingsbykaren.com. Karen is doing this in an effort to enhance her skill-set and get back to basics.

When asked why she was doing this, she says;

"I thought it would be really interesting to see how my skills develop over the course of a year, and by using a blog will offer me the ability to gain helpful criticism and feedback, while also giving me an element of accountability and responsibility to an expecting audience.  I hope to write a book on the experience next year."

People don't realize how much traditional art is involved in the digital world, the use of line, shape, structure, composition; these all matter, even in the digital world of the Internet. Getting back to basics is just one way to focus on these time-tested techniques.

She is also looking for participation from other local artists who would like to be featured on her site in the form of interviews, art submissions and critiques.  Proper credit will be give  to all art submissions. If interested in being a part of this project, to include inclusion in subsequent publication, if desired, please contact her via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Kickstarter has approved her project request, and you can support this ground-breaking project by visiting the following link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1531772819/365-drawings-by-karen

MTSU’s second art exhibition of 2012, “H x W x D,” will feature regional artists Kristina Arnold, Ron Lambert and Jackson Martin in the University’s Todd Gallery from Feb. 7 to March 1.

“The artists unite to create an exhibition that explores materials and spatial relationships through media such as, glass, metal, cloth and soil,” explained gallery secretary Eric Snyder. “Collectively, their work challenges perceptions of the body and its environment by creating sculptural works that move beyond object and act as environment.”

Arlington, Va., native Arnold received a degree in community health from Brown University and moved to Nashville to pursue a career in public health, working as a research associate in the pharmacoepidemiology division of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

After five years she returned to her first love and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Tennessee. She has worked in collections management for the Frank H. McClung Museum in Knoxville and the Parthenon Museum in Nashville. In 2005 she joined the faculty of Western Kentucky University’s Art Department, where she also serves as gallery director.

Arnold’s honors include the Individual Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts for the State of Tennessee in 2005 and an Individual Artist Grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women in 2007. She has been an Emerging Artist in Residence at Pilchuck Glass School, a visiting artist at the Worcester Center for Crafts and an artist-in-residence at the Municipal Gallery in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Working mainly in video and sculpture, Lambert investigates the intersection between psychology and the environment. He received his MFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, has taught at Cornish College of the Arts, Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle and at his alma mater, where he received an excellence in teaching award in 2008.

Lambert currently is an assistant professor at Watkins College of Art and Design in Nashville, and his work has been shown at the Catherine Person Gallery in Seattle, Athens Institute for Contemporary Art in Georgia and other prestigious facilities around the country. His award-winning work is in the Joseph Vascovitz collection and in the collection of the Tacoma Art Museum.

Martin, who was born and raised on a commune in rural Tennessee, moved to Nashville at age 10 and graduated from Hume-Fogg Academic High School. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at MTSU in 2004 and an MFA from the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2007.

Martin has exhibited his work nationally at venues such as Flashpoint in Washington, DC, Sculpture Key West and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, Mich. Most recently, his work was chosen by Elisabeth Sussman of the Whitney Museum for a group exhibition at Viridian Artists in New York City. He lives in Charleston, S.C., where he teaches at the College of Charleston and works for the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.

All exhibitions at MTSU’s Todd Gallery are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; the facility is closed on state holidays.
