Murfreesboro, TN - The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties has announced that its Day of Action will be held March 31st, April 1st, and April 2nd. The event has expanded from one day to three days in 2011 as a result of a partnership with MTSU’s “Big Event” program and an opportunity to engage more volunteers with an extended amount of shifts.

During the Day of Action, teams of volunteers from employers, schools, churches, civic organizations, and MTSU will perform community service for United Way’s partner agencies as well as local schools and other non-profit and community organizations. These projects may vary from landscaping to painting a room to delivering meals to those in need.

“We decided to expand our Day of Action event this year in order to partner with MTSU’s Big Event, which is a very similar service opportunity to our Day of Action,” said Stephanie Patton, Director of Community Impact at the local United Way. “We also hope that this will allow more volunteers to participate due to the increased options of shifts, which will include two weekend shifts.”

Organizers are expecting as many as 500 volunteers this year. United Way’s Day of Action consisted of more than 260 volunteers in 2010, while MTSU’s 2010 Big Event involved approximately 300 volunteers.

United Way will work with MTSU to pair volunteers with projects based upon the number of volunteers on the team, any special skills, and the availability of the team. Participants will receive an event T-shirt to wear during their shift.
