Murfreesboro, TN - Middle Tennessee Medical Center (MTMC) has pledged $50,000 over the next five years to the Interfaith Dental Clinic for its recently opened Rutherford County facility and capital campaign. Interfaith Dental helps restore, protect and improve the oral health of uninsured, low-income, working people and the elderly through access to affordable quality dental care and education.

Gordon Ferguson, president and CEO at MTMC and Timm Glover, vice president of mission and leadership formation at MTMC, presented Dr. Rhonda Switzer, executive director of the Interfaith Dental Clinic of Rutherford County with a check for the pledge amount on April 30.

“Access to dental care is one of the top needs in the communities we serve,” said Ferguson. “Dental care often helps in detecting other diseases and our partnership with the newly opened Interfaith Dental Clinic further supports our mission of serving the most vulnerable and improving the health of individuals across Rutherford and surrounding counties.”

The Nashville clinic has seen close to 200 Rutherford County residents over the past couple years, recording more than 700 appointments, with more residents on the appointment waiting list every day. The increased drive time added to patients’ financial and access burden.

The new clinic, located on 210 Robert Rose Drive in Murfreesboro, will house a board room named in honor of Middle Tennessee Medical Center’s gift and advocacy partnership.

The Interfaith Dental Clinic is a 501(c)(3) program founded to bring people of all faiths together in a healing ministry, serving the working poor through quality, comprehensive dental care. The clinic does not see walk-in patients, and the current waiting period for new patient visits is 8-10 weeks. For more information, please visit http://www.interfaithdentalclinic.com/.

RCA recording artist and Murfreesboro native Chris Young recently donated a selection of his touring audio equipment and accessories to the Department of Production Services at Middle Tennessee State University.

Production Services, a department within MTSU’s Division of Business and Finance, provides comprehensive event-production services, including technical expertise, personnel, audio, lighting, video and staging for numerous campus events as well as University-related off-campus functions.

Craig Doman, director of production services, added “a great big thanks to Chris Young for thinking of us.”“We are pleased that Chris chose to donate some of his touring equipment to the University,” said Joe Bales, vice president for development and university relations. “This donation represents his latest efforts to give back.”

“We accept his donation with gratitude and look forward to incorporating his gift into our many services,” Doman continued. “Our staff, which includes more than 100 students, will greatly benefit.”

The former MTSU student has performed several times in Murphy Center as his music career has ascended, and he remains generous with his time and talent. In 2008, Young was the special guest of MTSU’s Invention Convention—the same event he attended as a child—where he sang several songs to an excited crowd of 300 middle-school children.

“MTSU has been a great supporter over the years, and I’m glad for the chance to share this equipment with the University’s music and production students,” the singer/songwriter said.

Young just experienced an amazing year that included a Grammy nomination; an American Country Award win; five national TV appearances; the release of his third album, “Neon”; his third and fourth consecutive No.1 singles; and tours with Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts.

The new year looks even brighter. Young appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” only two weeks after entertaining a sold-out New Year’s Eve crowd in Fort Worth, Texas. Miranda Lambert also has selected Young as her special guest for her 2012 “On Fire” tour.

Young’s current single, “You,” from the “Neon” CD has already hit No. 2 on the Billboard country chart.

“Chris Young has remained a true Blue Raider at heart and has always been extremely generous with his time and talents,” MTSU’s Bales added.

Murfreesboro, TN - The Oaklands Historic House Museum educational programs recently received a generous donation from the 5th graders at Scales Elementary. One hundred and fifty 5th graders walked in the school’s “Step Up and Serve” fundraiser, which donated 10% of the 5th grades’ money raised to Oaklands. These giving students raised $866.69 that will be used to present educational programs such as the “Days of Washing, Churning, and Learning” on May 12 & 13 to school children across middle Tennessee.

Oaklands Historic House Museum was selected by the 5th grade as they participate in an educational field trip to the site each year. “The 5th grade teachers find this field experience highly beneficial. This year they saw the benefit of the children adopting this agency and being a part of the educational experience for others”, said Catherine Stephens, Scales Elementary Principal. In addition to the donation, the students will also conduct an “act” of service as well. The grade will take a service trip to Oaklands Historic House Museum this spring.

Oaklands was originally built around 1818 on the property of Dr. James Maney and his wife, Sallie Hardy Murfree. Sallie inherited the property from her father, Lt. Col. Hardy Murfree, for whom Murfreesboro is named. As the Maney family prospered, the original two-room, brick house was expanded and transformed into the spacious Italianate mansion situated on a 1500-acre plantation and one of the most elegant homes in Middle Tennessee.

Oaklands Historic House Museum, located at 900 North Maney Avenue in Murfreesboro, Tennessee is a nationally registered historic landmark that reflects a time of prosperity in the Old South, as well as the hardships suffered during the Civil War.
